01Nigam at a glance
Nigam (निगम) is one of the twelve Chitraguptavanshi Kayastha up-jaatis. In Kayastha tradition the Nigam vansh descends from Vishvabhanu, a son of Bhagwan Shri Chitragupta and Devi Nandini.
02Meaning and origin of the name
The name recalls Nigama — the Vedas and sacred texts — fitting for a line of scribes and scholars. Scholars of Indian literary history such as P. K. Gode recorded Nigam as a sub-caste of the Chitraguptavanshi Kayasthas.
03History of the Nigam Kayasthas
- Medieval inscriptions — the word Naigama appears, together with Mathura and Saksena, among the epithets used for Kayasthas in inscriptions of the 11th–12th centuries.
- Urdu journalism — Munshi Daya Narain Nigam of Kanpur edited the famous Urdu journal Zamana, which first published Premchand.
- Public life — Nigam families have served as legislators, judges, teachers and officers across UP and MP.
04Nigams today
Kanpur, Lucknow, Prayagraj, Jhansi, Gwalior, Bhopal, Jabalpur, Indore and Delhi have well-known Nigam families. Today the most famous Nigam is the playback singer Sonu Nigam.
05Traditions, gotra and kuldevi
Nigam families share the customs of all Chitraguptavanshi Kayasthas:
- Chitragupta Puja (Yama Dwitiya) — on Kartik Shukla Dwitiya, the day of Bhai Dooj, the family worships Bhagwan Shri Chitragupta with pen, ink and account books. See the full Kalam-Dawat Puja vidhi and why it falls on Bhai Dooj.
- Resting the pen — in many Nigam homes the pen is not used from Diwali evening until the puja, and writing begins again with the yearly account written before the Lord.
- Love of learning — education, writing and public service have always been the pride of the vansh.
- Marriage — traditionally within the Chitraguptavanshi Kayastha samaj; today families match horoscopes, education and values more than the exact up-jaati.
Kuldevi: the family goddess differs from one Nigam family to another — there is no single kuldevi for the whole vansh. Ask the eldest members of the family or the family priest, and write it down for the next generation.
Gotra: gotras are passed down inside each family and are not the same for every Nigam. Families that do not know their gotra traditionally take Kashyap gotra, a common Hindu custom.

08Frequently asked questions
Is Nigam a Kayastha surname?
Yes. Nigam (निगम) is one of the twelve Chitraguptavanshi Kayastha up-jaatis (sub-castes). The surname is also used by some families of other communities, so a surname alone does not tell anyone’s community.
Who is the founder of the Nigam vansh?
In Kayastha tradition the Nigam vansh descends from Vishvabhanu, a son of Bhagwan Shri Chitragupta and Devi Nandini. Different granths spell the names slightly differently.
Which caste is Nigam?
Nigam is a sub-caste (up-jaati) of the Chitraguptavanshi Kayasthas, the community that worships Lord Chitragupta as its Kul Devta.
What is the gotra of Nigam Kayasthas?
Gotras differ from family to family inside the Nigam vansh. Ask the elders or the family priest; families that do not know their gotra traditionally use Kashyap gotra.
Can Nigam marry another Kayastha sub-caste?
Yes. Traditionally marriages were within the same up-jaati, but today marriages between the twelve Chitraguptavanshi up-jaatis are common and widely accepted.
