01Who are the Kayasthas?
Kayasthas (कायस्थ) are a Hindu community of India, traditionally known as scribes, record-keepers, administrators, scholars and writers. Most Kayasthas of North India call themselves Chitraguptavanshi — descendants of Lord Chitragupta — and are found across Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Delhi, Jharkhand, Uttarakhand and every big city of India, as well as abroad.
For centuries Kayasthas served in royal courts and administrations as munshis, kanungos, accountants and record-keepers, and later became widely known in law, education, literature, government service, medicine and public life. Learning and the written word — the kalam (pen) and dawat (inkpot) — are at the heart of Kayastha identity.
02Lord Chitragupta — the Kul Devta
According to Hindu tradition, after creating the world Lord Brahma meditated, and from his entire body (kaya) appeared Lord Chitragupta, holding a pen and an inkpot. He was given the duty of recording the good and bad deeds (karma) of every living being, and he sits beside Yamraj, the god of dharma and death, so that every soul is judged fairly.
Because he was born from Brahma’s kaya, his descendants are called Kayastha. Shri Chitragupta Ji Maharaj is the Kul Devta (family deity) of Chitraguptavanshi Kayasthas, and temples dedicated to him are found in many cities — Ayodhya, Kanchipuram, Hyderabad, Patna, Khajuraho and others are often mentioned by devotees.
03The 12 Chitraguptavanshi sub-castes (up-jaatis)
Tradition says Lord Chitragupta had twelve sons, from whom the twelve up-jaatis of Chitraguptavanshi Kayasthas descend:
| # | Up-jaati | हिन्दी |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Srivastava | श्रीवास्तव |
| 2 | Saxena | सक्सेना |
| 3 | Mathur | माथुर |
| 4 | Bhatnagar | भटनागर |
| 5 | Nigam | निगम |
| 6 | Asthana | अस्थाना |
| 7 | Ambashtha | अम्बष्ठ |
| 8 | Kulshreshtha | कुलश्रेष्ठ |
| 9 | Gaur | गौड़ |
| 10 | Karna | कर्ण |
| 11 | Suryadhwaj | सूर्यध्वज |
| 12 | Valmik | वाल्मीक |
Each up-jaati is a large community of many families and gotras, spread across many states today. Inside the Kayastha Setu app every member can add their up-jaati, and the directory and matrimony can be filtered by it.
04Other Kayastha communities
- Chandraseniya Kayastha Prabhu (CKP) — a Kayastha community of Maharashtra, traditionally associated with administration and the military.
- Bengali Kayasthas — one of the major communities of Bengal; surnames such as Bose, Ghosh, Mitra, Dutta and Guha are common among them.
- Kayastha families are also found in Odisha, Assam, Gujarat, the Deccan and among the Indian diaspora in the UK, USA, UAE, Canada and elsewhere.
Traditions, rituals and surnames differ from region to region — but the shared pride in learning, service and the pen is common to all.
05Common Kayastha surnames
Many Kayastha families use their up-jaati as their surname — Srivastava (Shrivastava), Saxena, Mathur, Bhatnagar, Nigam, Asthana, Ambasta / Ambashtha, Kulshreshtha, Gaur, Karn, Suryadhwaj and Valmiki. Others use names such as Sinha, Prasad, Sahay / Sahai, Lal, Varma, Raizada, Johri, Bose, Ghosh, Mitra or Dutta, depending on region and family tradition.
Note: many of these surnames are also used by other communities, so a surname alone does not tell you someone’s community.
06Chitragupta Puja and Kalam-Dawat Puja
The most important festival of the Kayastha samaj is Chitragupta Puja, celebrated on Yama Dwitiya — Kartik Shukla Dwitiya, the day of Bhai Dooj, two days after Diwali.
- Families worship Lord Chitragupta along with the kalam (pen), dawat (ink), books and account registers — this is why it is also called Kalam-Dawat Puja.
- In many homes members write their name, address, income-expense and a prayer (often the words “Shri Chitragupta Ji Sahay”) on a fresh paper and offer it to the Lord.
- Many families keep the pen aside from Diwali until the puja, and begin writing again after it.
- Kayastha sabhas organise community pujas, cultural programmes and get-togethers on this day.
The Kayastha Setu app shows the date in its daily panchang, sends a reminder, and members share Chitragupta Puja wishes with Shubh Sandesh cards.
