01Saxena at a glance
Saxena (सक्सेना), also written Saksena, is one of the twelve Chitraguptavanshi Kayastha up-jaatis, found mainly in the Hindi-speaking states of northern and central India. In Kayastha tradition the Saxena vansh descends from Matiman (also called Matibhan), a son of Bhagwan Shri Chitragupta and Devi Shobhavati.
02Meaning and origin of the name
The surname is said to come from the Sanskrit sakhisena — “friend of the army”, a reminder of the vansh’s long service to kings as record-keepers and officers. Community tradition also links the Saxenas with the ancient city of Sankasya (Sankisa, near Farrukhabad). Saksena is the older English spelling of the same name.
03History of the Saxena Kayasthas
- In medieval inscriptions — the word Saksena appears among the epithets used for Kayasthas in inscriptions of the 11th–12th centuries, showing how old the name is.
- Mughal-era administrators — Nawal Ray, a Saxena Kayastha from Etawah, rose to become deputy governor of Allahabad in 1748.
- Education and service — together with the Srivastavas, Bhatnagars and Ambashthas, Saxena families of the Doab were counted by 1900 among the most educated communities of North India.
- Freedom struggle — Shibban Lal Saxena of Gorakhpur fought for independence and sat in the Constituent Assembly that wrote India’s Constitution.
04Saxenas today
Large Saxena communities live in Bareilly, Moradabad, Shahjahanpur, Budaun, Etawah, Farrukhabad, Agra, Lucknow, Delhi-NCR, Bhopal and Gwalior, and across the world. Saxenas are known in Hindi literature, the armed forces, police and civil services, science and cinema.
05Traditions, gotra and kuldevi
Saxena families share the customs of all Chitraguptavanshi Kayasthas:
- Chitragupta Puja (Yama Dwitiya) — on Kartik Shukla Dwitiya, the day of Bhai Dooj, the family worships Bhagwan Shri Chitragupta with pen, ink and account books. See the full Kalam-Dawat Puja vidhi and why it falls on Bhai Dooj.
- Resting the pen — in many Saxena homes the pen is not used from Diwali evening until the puja, and writing begins again with the yearly account written before the Lord.
- Love of learning — education, writing and public service have always been the pride of the vansh.
- Marriage — traditionally within the Chitraguptavanshi Kayastha samaj; today families match horoscopes, education and values more than the exact up-jaati.
Kuldevi: one published community list names Shakambhari Mata as the kuldevi of the Saxenas, but family traditions differ. Follow your own family’s practice and write it down for the next generation.
Gotra: gotras are passed down inside each family and are not the same for every Saxena. Families that do not know their gotra traditionally take Kashyap gotra, a common Hindu custom.

08Frequently asked questions
Is Saxena a Kayastha surname?
Yes. Saxena (सक्सेना) is one of the twelve Chitraguptavanshi Kayastha up-jaatis (sub-castes). The surname is also used by some families of other communities, so a surname alone does not tell anyone’s community.
Who is the founder of the Saxena vansh?
In Kayastha tradition the Saxena vansh descends from Matiman, a son of Bhagwan Shri Chitragupta and Devi Shobhavati. Different granths spell the names slightly differently.
Which caste is Saxena?
Saxena is a sub-caste (up-jaati) of the Chitraguptavanshi Kayasthas, the community that worships Lord Chitragupta as its Kul Devta.
What is the gotra of Saxena Kayasthas?
Gotras differ from family to family inside the Saxena vansh. Ask the elders or the family priest; families that do not know their gotra traditionally use Kashyap gotra.
Can Saxena marry another Kayastha sub-caste?
Yes. Traditionally marriages were within the same up-jaati, but today marriages between the twelve Chitraguptavanshi up-jaatis are common and widely accepted.
How can I find Saxena families or a Saxena rishta?
Download the Kayastha Setu app — search the family directory by surname and city and use Kayastha matrimony to find Saxena and other Kayastha profiles.
Is Saksena the same as Saxena?
Yes. Saksena is an older English spelling of सक्सेना; both are the same Chitraguptavanshi Kayastha surname.
