01Valmik at a glance
Valmik (वाल्मीक) is one of the twelve Chitraguptavanshi Kayastha up-jaatis. In the most widely printed Kayastha list the Valmik vansh descends from Atindriya (also called Jitendriya), the youngest son of Bhagwan Shri Chitragupta and Devi Shobhavati. Valmik Kayasthas are a separate group from the Valmiki community that shares a similar name.
02Meaning and origin of the name
The name recalls Maharishi Valmiki, the poet of the Ramayana — fitting for a vansh of the pen. Granths differ on which son founded which line, and some lists connect Atindriya with other branches; every family’s own tradition deserves respect.
03History of the Valmik Kayasthas
The Valmik line is among the smallest of the twelve. Its families served, like the other vansh, as writers and officials, and many have long written a different surname while keeping “Valmik” as the up-jaati inside the family.
04Valmik Kayasthas today
Because the vansh is small, Valmik families often lose track of one another. Add “Valmik” as your up-jaati on Kayastha Setu so others can find you, and record your lineage in the family tree.
05Traditions, gotra and kuldevi
Valmik families share the customs of all Chitraguptavanshi Kayasthas:
- Chitragupta Puja (Yama Dwitiya) — on Kartik Shukla Dwitiya, the day of Bhai Dooj, the family worships Bhagwan Shri Chitragupta with pen, ink and account books. See the full Kalam-Dawat Puja vidhi and why it falls on Bhai Dooj.
- Resting the pen — in many Valmik homes the pen is not used from Diwali evening until the puja, and writing begins again with the yearly account written before the Lord.
- Love of learning — education, writing and public service have always been the pride of the vansh.
- Marriage — traditionally within the Chitraguptavanshi Kayastha samaj; today families match horoscopes, education and values more than the exact up-jaati.
Kuldevi: the family goddess differs from one Valmik family to another — there is no single kuldevi for the whole vansh. Ask the eldest members of the family or the family priest, and write it down for the next generation.
Gotra: gotras are passed down inside each family and are not the same for every Valmik. Families that do not know their gotra traditionally take Kashyap gotra, a common Hindu custom.

08Frequently asked questions
Is Valmik a Kayastha surname?
Yes. Valmik (वाल्मीक) is one of the twelve Chitraguptavanshi Kayastha up-jaatis (sub-castes). The surname is also used by some families of other communities, so a surname alone does not tell anyone’s community.
Who is the founder of the Valmik vansh?
In Kayastha tradition the Valmik vansh descends from Atindriya, a son of Bhagwan Shri Chitragupta and Devi Shobhavati. Different granths spell the names slightly differently.
Which caste is Valmik?
Valmik is a sub-caste (up-jaati) of the Chitraguptavanshi Kayasthas, the community that worships Lord Chitragupta as its Kul Devta.
What is the gotra of Valmik Kayasthas?
Gotras differ from family to family inside the Valmik vansh. Ask the elders or the family priest; families that do not know their gotra traditionally use Kashyap gotra.
Can Valmik marry another Kayastha sub-caste?
Yes. Traditionally marriages were within the same up-jaati, but today marriages between the twelve Chitraguptavanshi up-jaatis are common and widely accepted.
How can I find Valmik families or a Valmik rishta?
Download the Kayastha Setu app — search the family directory by surname and city and use Kayastha matrimony to find Valmik and other Kayastha profiles.
Are Valmik Kayasthas the same as the Valmiki community?
No. Valmik Kayasthas are one of the twelve Chitraguptavanshi Kayastha up-jaatis; the Valmiki community is a different community with a similar name.
09The other Chitraguptavanshi surnames
