Suryadhwaj (सूर्यध्वज) is one of the twelve Chitraguptavanshi Kayastha up-jaatis and one of the smaller ones. In Kayastha tradition the Suryadhwaj vansh descends from Vibhanu, a son of Bhagwan Shri Chitragupta and Devi Nandini.

02Meaning and origin of the name

Surya is the Sun and dhwaj a banner — “those who carry the Sun’s banner”. The name is a reminder that Devi Nandini was the daughter of Shraddhadev (Vaivasvata) Manu, son of Surya dev.

03History of the Suryadhwaj Kayasthas

Like the other eleven vansh, the Suryadhwaj Kayasthas served as scribes and officials and traditionally married within the samaj. Because it is a smaller vansh, many Suryadhwaj families write a different surname — often Srivastava, Sinha, Lal or Prasad — and keep “Suryadhwaj” as the up-jaati in family records. That makes it especially important to note it down for the next generation.

04Suryadhwaj Kayasthas today

Suryadhwaj families live across Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Delhi and beyond. Adding “Suryadhwaj” as your up-jaati on Kayastha Setu helps other Suryadhwaj families — and their children — find each other.

05Traditions, gotra and kuldevi

Suryadhwaj families share the customs of all Chitraguptavanshi Kayasthas:

  • Chitragupta Puja (Yama Dwitiya) — on Kartik Shukla Dwitiya, the day of Bhai Dooj, the family worships Bhagwan Shri Chitragupta with pen, ink and account books. See the full Kalam-Dawat Puja vidhi and why it falls on Bhai Dooj.
  • Resting the pen — in many Suryadhwaj homes the pen is not used from Diwali evening until the puja, and writing begins again with the yearly account written before the Lord.
  • Love of learning — education, writing and public service have always been the pride of the vansh.
  • Marriage — traditionally within the Chitraguptavanshi Kayastha samaj; today families match horoscopes, education and values more than the exact up-jaati.

Kuldevi: the family goddess differs from one Suryadhwaj family to another — there is no single kuldevi for the whole vansh. Ask the eldest members of the family or the family priest, and write it down for the next generation.

Gotra: gotras are passed down inside each family and are not the same for every Suryadhwaj. Families that do not know their gotra traditionally take Kashyap gotra, a common Hindu custom.

08Frequently asked questions

Is Suryadhwaj a Kayastha surname?

Yes. Suryadhwaj (सूर्यध्वज) is one of the twelve Chitraguptavanshi Kayastha up-jaatis (sub-castes). The surname is also used by some families of other communities, so a surname alone does not tell anyone’s community.

Who is the founder of the Suryadhwaj vansh?

In Kayastha tradition the Suryadhwaj vansh descends from Vibhanu, a son of Bhagwan Shri Chitragupta and Devi Nandini. Different granths spell the names slightly differently.

Which caste is Suryadhwaj?

Suryadhwaj is a sub-caste (up-jaati) of the Chitraguptavanshi Kayasthas, the community that worships Lord Chitragupta as its Kul Devta.

What is the gotra of Suryadhwaj Kayasthas?

Gotras differ from family to family inside the Suryadhwaj vansh. Ask the elders or the family priest; families that do not know their gotra traditionally use Kashyap gotra.

Can Suryadhwaj marry another Kayastha sub-caste?

Yes. Traditionally marriages were within the same up-jaati, but today marriages between the twelve Chitraguptavanshi up-jaatis are common and widely accepted.

How can I find Suryadhwaj families or a Suryadhwaj rishta?

Download the Kayastha Setu app — search the family directory by surname and city and use Kayastha matrimony to find Suryadhwaj and other Kayastha profiles.
