01Kulshreshtha at a glance
Kulshreshtha (कुलश्रेष्ठ), also written Kulshrestha, is one of the twelve Chitraguptavanshi Kayastha up-jaatis. In the most widely printed Kayastha list the Kulshreshtha vansh descends from Viryabhanu (Viryavan), a son of Bhagwan Shri Chitragupta and Devi Nandini.
02Meaning and origin of the name
Kul means family or clan and shreshtha means the best — “the best of the clan”. Some Hindi sources link the Kulshreshthas with another son of Chitragupta, Charun (Atindriya), who is remembered as a devotee of Devi Lakshmi; lists of the twelve sons differ from one granth to another, and both traditions are respected.
03History of the Kulshreshtha Kayasthas
Like the other Chitraguptavanshi groups, the Kulshreshthas served as scribes, accountants and officials in the courts of the Braj region and Rajasthan, and later moved into English education, teaching, law and government service. Historians note that the twelve sub-groups traditionally married within themselves and lived in particular regions; many Kulshreshtha families today trace their roots to the Agra–Mathura belt and western Uttar Pradesh.
04Kulshreshthas today
Agra, Mathura, Firozabad, Etah, Mainpuri, Aligarh, Jaipur, Gwalior and Delhi have well-known Kulshreshtha families, and many live abroad. They are known especially in teaching, medicine, engineering and the civil services.
05Traditions, gotra and kuldevi
Kulshreshtha families share the customs of all Chitraguptavanshi Kayasthas:
- Chitragupta Puja (Yama Dwitiya) — on Kartik Shukla Dwitiya, the day of Bhai Dooj, the family worships Bhagwan Shri Chitragupta with pen, ink and account books. See the full Kalam-Dawat Puja vidhi and why it falls on Bhai Dooj.
- Resting the pen — in many Kulshreshtha homes the pen is not used from Diwali evening until the puja, and writing begins again with the yearly account written before the Lord.
- Love of learning — education, writing and public service have always been the pride of the vansh.
- Marriage — traditionally within the Chitraguptavanshi Kayastha samaj; today families match horoscopes, education and values more than the exact up-jaati.
Kuldevi: the family goddess differs from one Kulshreshtha family to another — there is no single kuldevi for the whole vansh. Ask the eldest members of the family or the family priest, and write it down for the next generation.
Gotra: gotras are passed down inside each family and are not the same for every Kulshreshtha. Families that do not know their gotra traditionally take Kashyap gotra, a common Hindu custom.

08Frequently asked questions
Is Kulshreshtha a Kayastha surname?
Yes. Kulshreshtha (कुलश्रेष्ठ) is one of the twelve Chitraguptavanshi Kayastha up-jaatis (sub-castes). The surname is also used by some families of other communities, so a surname alone does not tell anyone’s community.
Who is the founder of the Kulshreshtha vansh?
In Kayastha tradition the Kulshreshtha vansh descends from Viryabhanu, a son of Bhagwan Shri Chitragupta and Devi Nandini. Different granths spell the names slightly differently.
Which caste is Kulshreshtha?
Kulshreshtha is a sub-caste (up-jaati) of the Chitraguptavanshi Kayasthas, the community that worships Lord Chitragupta as its Kul Devta.
What is the gotra of Kulshreshtha Kayasthas?
Gotras differ from family to family inside the Kulshreshtha vansh. Ask the elders or the family priest; families that do not know their gotra traditionally use Kashyap gotra.
Can Kulshreshtha marry another Kayastha sub-caste?
Yes. Traditionally marriages were within the same up-jaati, but today marriages between the twelve Chitraguptavanshi up-jaatis are common and widely accepted.
How can I find Kulshreshtha families or a Kulshreshtha rishta?
Download the Kayastha Setu app — search the family directory by surname and city and use Kayastha matrimony to find Kulshreshtha and other Kayastha profiles.
