Gaur (गौड़), also written Gour, is one of the twelve Chitraguptavanshi Kayastha up-jaatis. In Kayastha tradition the Gaur vansh descends from Sucharu, a son of Bhagwan Shri Chitragupta and Devi Shobhavati. The surname Gaur is also used by other communities — for example Gaur Brahmins — so Gaur Kayastha families usually say “Gaur Kayastha” to be clear.

02Meaning and origin of the name

Kayastha tradition links the name with Gauda, the ancient name of the Bengal–Bihar region. As with all twelve vansh, the Gaur Kayasthas trace their descent to Lord Chitragupta and his consorts, and historians note that the sub-groups traditionally married within themselves and lived in particular regions of Hindustan.

03History of the Gaur Kayasthas

  • Scribes and officials — Gaur Kayasthas served, like the other vansh, as record-keepers and officers in courts and revenue offices.
  • A first in Oudh — Brij Bhukhan Lal, a Gaur Kayastha, became the first Indian to hold the post of Registrar (Judicial) in Oudh during British rule.

04Gaur Kayasthas today

Gaur Kayastha families live across Uttar Pradesh, Delhi-NCR, Madhya Pradesh and beyond. Because the surname is shared with other communities, Gaur Kayasthas often mention their up-jaati clearly in matrimony profiles — on Kayastha Setu you can set “Gaur” as your up-jaati so families find you easily.

05Traditions, gotra and kuldevi

Gaur families share the customs of all Chitraguptavanshi Kayasthas:

  • Chitragupta Puja (Yama Dwitiya) — on Kartik Shukla Dwitiya, the day of Bhai Dooj, the family worships Bhagwan Shri Chitragupta with pen, ink and account books. See the full Kalam-Dawat Puja vidhi and why it falls on Bhai Dooj.
  • Resting the pen — in many Gaur homes the pen is not used from Diwali evening until the puja, and writing begins again with the yearly account written before the Lord.
  • Love of learning — education, writing and public service have always been the pride of the vansh.
  • Marriage — traditionally within the Chitraguptavanshi Kayastha samaj; today families match horoscopes, education and values more than the exact up-jaati.

Kuldevi: the family goddess differs from one Gaur family to another — there is no single kuldevi for the whole vansh. Ask the eldest members of the family or the family priest, and write it down for the next generation.

Gotra: gotras are passed down inside each family and are not the same for every Gaur. Families that do not know their gotra traditionally take Kashyap gotra, a common Hindu custom.

08Frequently asked questions

Is Gaur a Kayastha surname?

Yes. Gaur (गौड़) is one of the twelve Chitraguptavanshi Kayastha up-jaatis (sub-castes). The surname is also used by some families of other communities, so a surname alone does not tell anyone’s community.

Who is the founder of the Gaur vansh?

In Kayastha tradition the Gaur vansh descends from Sucharu, a son of Bhagwan Shri Chitragupta and Devi Shobhavati. Different granths spell the names slightly differently.

Which caste is Gaur?

Gaur is a sub-caste (up-jaati) of the Chitraguptavanshi Kayasthas, the community that worships Lord Chitragupta as its Kul Devta.

What is the gotra of Gaur Kayasthas?

Gotras differ from family to family inside the Gaur vansh. Ask the elders or the family priest; families that do not know their gotra traditionally use Kashyap gotra.

Can Gaur marry another Kayastha sub-caste?

Yes. Traditionally marriages were within the same up-jaati, but today marriages between the twelve Chitraguptavanshi up-jaatis are common and widely accepted.

How can I find Gaur families or a Gaur rishta?

Download the Kayastha Setu app — search the family directory by surname and city and use Kayastha matrimony to find Gaur and other Kayastha profiles.

Are Gaur Kayasthas and Gaur Brahmins the same?

No. Gaur Kayasthas are one of the twelve Chitraguptavanshi Kayastha up-jaatis; Gaur Brahmins are a separate community that shares the surname.
