01Bhatnagar at a glance
Bhatnagar (भटनागर) is a surname found mainly among Hindu Kayasthas and one of the twelve Chitraguptavanshi up-jaatis. In Kayastha tradition the Bhatnagar vansh descends from Chitra (also called Chitraksha), a son of Bhagwan Shri Chitragupta and Devi Shobhavati.
02Meaning and origin of the name
Community tradition links the name with Bhatner, the old fort-town of today’s Hanumangarh in Rajasthan, from where Bhatnagar families are said to have spread across the Doab and Malwa. “Nagar” means a town — Bhatnagar, “of Bhatner”.
03History of the Bhatnagar Kayasthas
- A “service” community of the Doab — with the Srivastavas, Saxenas and Ambashthas, the Bhatnagars were by 1900 counted among the most educated and influential communities of North India.
- Urdu and Hindi letters — Munshi Hargopal Tafta, the Urdu poet and pupil of Mirza Ghalib, came from a Bhatnagar Kayastha family.
- Father of Indian research labs — Dr. Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar founded the CSIR and its national laboratories; India’s top science award carries his name.
04Bhatnagars today
Bhatnagar families live in Delhi-NCR, Meerut, Bareilly, Moradabad, Agra, Jaipur, Indore, Bhopal and Gwalior, and all over the world — known in science, academics, the civil services, sports and the arts.
05Traditions, gotra and kuldevi
Bhatnagar families share the customs of all Chitraguptavanshi Kayasthas:
- Chitragupta Puja (Yama Dwitiya) — on Kartik Shukla Dwitiya, the day of Bhai Dooj, the family worships Bhagwan Shri Chitragupta with pen, ink and account books. See the full Kalam-Dawat Puja vidhi and why it falls on Bhai Dooj.
- Resting the pen — in many Bhatnagar homes the pen is not used from Diwali evening until the puja, and writing begins again with the yearly account written before the Lord.
- Love of learning — education, writing and public service have always been the pride of the vansh.
- Marriage — traditionally within the Chitraguptavanshi Kayastha samaj; today families match horoscopes, education and values more than the exact up-jaati.
Kuldevi: one published community list names Jayanti Mata as the kuldevi of the Bhatnagars, but family traditions differ. Follow your own family’s practice.
Gotra: gotras are passed down inside each family and are not the same for every Bhatnagar. Families that do not know their gotra traditionally take Kashyap gotra, a common Hindu custom.

Which caste is Bhatnagar?

What is the gotra of Bhatnagar Kayasthas?
Gotras differ from family to family inside the Bhatnagar vansh. Ask the elders or the family priest; families that do not know their gotra traditionally use Kashyap gotra.
Can Bhatnagar marry another Kayastha sub-caste?
Yes. Traditionally marriages were within the same up-jaati, but today marriages between the twelve Chitraguptavanshi up-jaatis are common and widely accepted.
