Ambashtha (अम्बष्ठ), also written Ambastha, is a Chitraguptavanshi Kayastha sub-caste found mainly in Bihar and Jharkhand. In Kayastha tradition the Ambashtha vansh descends from Himvan, a son of Bhagwan Shri Chitragupta and Devi Shobhavati.

02An ancient name

The name is very old. The Mahabharata mentions a warrior people called the Ambasthas, living in the north-west of the subcontinent, who fought in the Kurukshetra war. Some old law books use the word in a different sense, so the name has more than one history.

03History of the Ambashtha Kayasthas

  • From the north-west to Bihar — according to historian Bindeshwari Prasad Sinha, the ancient Ambasthas migrated to Bihar, where they became a sub-division of the region’s Kayasthas; Bihar was not their first home.
  • An educated service community — with the Srivastavas, Saxenas and Bhatnagars, the Ambashthas were by 1900 counted among the most educated and influential Kayastha groups of North India.
  • Bihar’s public life — Ambashtha families have long served Bihar as lawyers, teachers, zamindari officials and administrators.

04Ambashthas today

Patna, Gaya, Muzaffarpur, Bhagalpur, Darbhanga, Ranchi, Dhanbad, Jamshedpur and Kolkata have large Ambashtha communities. Many Ambashtha families write Sinha, Prasad, Sahay or Varma as their surname, so the up-jaati is often known only inside the family — worth writing down for the children.

05Traditions, gotra and kuldevi

Ambashtha families share the customs of all Chitraguptavanshi Kayasthas:

  • Chitragupta Puja (Yama Dwitiya) — on Kartik Shukla Dwitiya, the day of Bhai Dooj, the family worships Bhagwan Shri Chitragupta with pen, ink and account books. See the full Kalam-Dawat Puja vidhi and why it falls on Bhai Dooj.
  • Resting the pen — in many Ambashtha homes the pen is not used from Diwali evening until the puja, and writing begins again with the yearly account written before the Lord.
  • Love of learning — education, writing and public service have always been the pride of the vansh.
  • Marriage — traditionally within the Chitraguptavanshi Kayastha samaj; today families match horoscopes, education and values more than the exact up-jaati.

Kuldevi: the family goddess differs from one Ambashtha family to another — there is no single kuldevi for the whole vansh. Ask the eldest members of the family or the family priest, and write it down for the next generation.

Gotra: gotras are passed down inside each family and are not the same for every Ambashtha. Families that do not know their gotra traditionally take Kashyap gotra, a common Hindu custom.

08Frequently asked questions

Is Ambashtha a Kayastha surname?

Yes. Ambashtha (अम्बष्ठ) is one of the twelve Chitraguptavanshi Kayastha up-jaatis (sub-castes). The surname is also used by some families of other communities, so a surname alone does not tell anyone’s community.

Who is the founder of the Ambashtha vansh?

In Kayastha tradition the Ambashtha vansh descends from Himvan, a son of Bhagwan Shri Chitragupta and Devi Shobhavati. Different granths spell the names slightly differently.

Which caste is Ambashtha?

Ambashtha is a sub-caste (up-jaati) of the Chitraguptavanshi Kayasthas, the community that worships Lord Chitragupta as its Kul Devta.

What is the gotra of Ambashtha Kayasthas?

Gotras differ from family to family inside the Ambashtha vansh. Ask the elders or the family priest; families that do not know their gotra traditionally use Kashyap gotra.

Can Ambashtha marry another Kayastha sub-caste?

Yes. Traditionally marriages were within the same up-jaati, but today marriages between the twelve Chitraguptavanshi up-jaatis are common and widely accepted.

How can I find Ambashtha families or a Ambashtha rishta?

Download the Kayastha Setu app — search the family directory by surname and city and use Kayastha matrimony to find Ambashtha and other Kayastha profiles.

Do Ambashtha families use other surnames?

Yes. Many Ambashtha Kayasthas, especially in Bihar, write Sinha, Prasad, Sahay or Varma as their surname and keep Ambashtha as the up-jaati in family records and on wedding cards.
