Kayastha Surnames: A Region-by-Region List with Meanings

Kayastha families live in almost every part of India, and their surnames are as varied as their regions. Some surnames come straight from the twelve Chitraguptavanshi vansh, some are titles earned in royal courts, and some are simply the names that a region’s Kayasthas have used for centuries. Here is a region-by-region guide.

The 12 Chitraguptavanshi surnames

In North India most Kayastha families use their up-jaati (vansh) as their surname. These twelve trace back to the twelve sons of Lord Chitragupta:

Read the story of how each vansh began in Chitragupta ji’s 12 sons and the 12 Kayastha vansh.

Other North Indian Kayastha surnames

Many Chitraguptavanshi families — especially in Bihar, Jharkhand and eastern Uttar Pradesh — write a different surname while keeping their up-jaati inside the family. Common ones are Sinha, Prasad, Sahay (Sahai), Lal, Varma, Narayan, Raizada, Johri and Bahadur. Some of these began as honorific titles given in Mughal and British-era administrations; others were adopted by a family branch and passed down. In such families the up-jaati usually appears on wedding cards and in matrimony details.

Bengali Kayastha surnames

Kayasthas are one of the major communities of Bengal. Well-known surnames include Bose (Basu), Ghosh, Mitra, Dutta (Dutt), Guha, Dey, Sinha and Pal. Bose, Ghosh and Mitra are traditionally counted among the most prominent Bengali Kayastha families.

CKP surnames (Maharashtra)

The Chandraseniya Kayastha Prabhu (CKP) community of Maharashtra traces its descent from the warrior Chandrasen and is famous both for administration and for courage — Baji Prabhu Deshpande, the hero of Pavan Khind, was a CKP. Common CKP surnames include Deshpande, Gupte, Chitnis, Karnik, Pradhan, Tipnis and Dighe. Several of these, such as Chitnis (secretary) and Deshpande, come from administrative posts the community held.

Karan Kayastha surnames (Odisha)

In Odisha the Karan community, known for administration and learning, commonly uses surnames such as Mohanty, Patnaik (Pattnaik) and Das.

A surname alone does not decide community

Almost every surname in this list is also used by families of other communities. Sinha, Prasad, Varma, Das, Pal, Dey or Deshpande, for example, are common across many castes and regions. So a surname is only a starting point — it never tells you for certain who someone is. Families themselves know their roots best, and that is the respectful way to learn.

Keep your roots written down

When a family changes cities or writes a different surname, the up-jaati is often forgotten in two or three generations. A simple habit protects it: write your up-jaati, gotra and the names of grandparents and great-grandparents somewhere the children can find them. On Kayastha Setu you can add your up-jaati to your profile, build a family tree, and search the family directory by surname or up-jaati.
