Kayastha Mahasabha: How Our Samaj Is Organised

The Kayastha samaj is organised through a network of sabhas (local councils) and mahasabhas (state or national bodies) that bring families together, preserve our traditions, and carry out community service. These organisations work at different levels—national, state and city—to keep the Kayastha community connected and to celebrate occasions like Chitragupta Puja with meaning and unity.

What Are Kayastha Sabhas and Mahasabhas?

A sabha is a local or city-level association of Kayastha families. A mahasabha is typically a state-level or national body that oversees sabhas within a region and helps coordinate larger initiatives.

These organisations serve several key purposes:

  • Organise social and religious events, especially Chitragupta Puja celebrations
  • Help families maintain connection with samaj customs and heritage
  • Provide a forum for matchmaking and social networking
  • Support community members during times of joy or difficulty
  • Keep records of samaj members and manage family directories
  • Promote education, health initiatives and other seva (service) activities

The structure varies by region. Some cities have well-established, formally registered mahasabhas; others have informal local groups run by volunteer families. What matters is the spirit of togetherness and duty to the samaj.

The Three Levels of Organisation

National Level

At the top, there may be an all-India Kayastha body or federation that represents the community's interests nationally, acts as a voice on important cultural or educational matters, and sometimes coordinates major samaj events or publications. Many national bodies maintain historical records and promote Kayastha scholarship and traditions.

State or Regional Mahasabha

Each state or major region typically has a mahasabha that oversees sabhas within that state, helps organise state-level Chitragupta Puja or samaj conferences, keeps a registry of families, and may manage community funds or welfare schemes. The state body often acts as a bridge between local sabhas and the national level.

City or Local Sabha

This is where most families interact. A city sabha organises Chitragupta Puja in your locality, holds social gatherings, helps with matchmaking, maintains contact details of members, and responds to weddings, births or losses in the community. Local sabhas are often run by a small committee of dedicated volunteers.

How Chitragupta Puja Brings Us Together

Chitragupta Puja (also called Chitraguptaji Jayanti) is the most important festival for Kayasthas, celebrated on the day when Chitragupta, our sampradaya's divine patron, is believed to have manifested. This festival is a major event that sabhas organise with great care.

A typical city sabha's Chitragupta Puja may include:

  • Morning puja at a designated temple or sabha premises, with Vedic rituals and prayers
  • Gathering of families for darshan and community meals (langur)
  • Cultural programmes including bhajans, talks on Kayastha history and values, and children's activities
  • Networking opportunities for families to meet, especially young people seeking alliances
  • Charitable distributions in keeping with the spirit of Chitragupta, the keeper of karmic accounts

Each region celebrates with its own flavour. To find out when and where your local sabha is holding Chitragupta Puja, the best approach is to connect with your city's sabha directly.

How to Find and Connect With Your Local Sabha

Finding your local Kayastha sabha used to mean asking older family members or checking notice boards. Today, there are easier ways:

Through Kayastha Setu

The Samaj ki Sabhayein (Sabhas) feature on Kayastha Setu (kayasthasetu.com) is a directory of active sabhas across India. You can search by city or state to find contact details, office addresses, and recent announcements from your local sabha. This feature also shows which sabhas are active on the app and how to reach their leaders.

Direct Outreach

Once you find your sabha's contact, reach out to the office-bearers or secretary. Most sabhas are welcoming to families new to the area or those wanting to re-engage. You can offer to volunteer, attend events, or simply register your family in their directory.

Community Connections

If you know other Kayastha families in your city, ask them about the sabha. Often, word of mouth leads you to active volunteers who can invite you to the next event.

How to Get Involved in Sabha Activities

Being part of a sabha does not mean holding office. There are many ways to contribute:

Involvement Type What It Means
Attend Events Come to puja, gatherings and family functions. This alone keeps the community alive.
Volunteer for Events Help organise Chitragupta Puja, manage food, decorate, or greet guests.
Donate or Sponsor Contribute funds or sponsor specific costs (prasad, flowers, event materials).
Join the Committee Take on a formal role (secretary, treasurer, event organiser) if you have time and interest.
Help with Records Assist in maintaining the family directory or genealogy records.
Mentor Young Members Share knowledge of Kayastha customs, history and values with the younger generation.

Most sabhas run on limited budgets and depend on volunteer energy. Even small help—bringing a dish to share, helping set up a marquee, or welcoming new families—makes a real difference.

The Spirit Behind Sabha Work

Sabhas exist because Kayasthas believe in samaj—the idea that we are stronger together. The work done in sabhas is largely seva (selfless service), guided by the values associated with Chitragupta: honesty, duty, record-keeping and fairness.

Whether your local sabha is formally registered or run informally by a few dedicated families, it represents the living bond of the Kayastha community. By getting involved, you are not just attending events; you are helping to keep our traditions alive and supporting fellow families in your area.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a sabha and a mahasabha?

A sabha is typically a local or city-level group of Kayastha families who organise community events and maintain member records. A mahasabha is usually a state or regional body that oversees multiple sabhas, coordinates larger initiatives, and acts as a connecting link to national-level organisations. Not all areas have both—some places have only a local sabha, others have a well-established mahasabha structure.

When is Chitragupta Puja celebrated and why is it important to sabhas?

Chitragupta Puja (Chitraguptaji Jayanti) is celebrated on the day that marks Chitragupta's manifestation, believed to fall in October or November each year according to the Hindu calendar. Sabhas consider it their most important festival because Chitragupta is the divine patron of the Kayastha sampradaya. Local sabhas make extensive efforts to organise grand pujas, bringing families together to pray, feast, and strengthen community bonds.

How do I find out if there is a sabha in my city?

The easiest way is to use the Samaj ki Sabhayein feature on Kayastha Setu (kayasthasetu.com), which lists active sabhas across India. You can also ask other Kayastha families you know, search online using your city name and 'Kayastha sabha,' or reach out to the state mahasabha if one exists in your region.

Do I need to be a member to attend sabha events?

Most sabhas welcome Kayastha families to their events, especially major celebrations like Chitragupta Puja. Formal membership may involve registering your details and contributing a small annual fee, which helps cover event costs and maintenance. However, first-time attendance is usually free and open to all community members. Once you connect with your sabha, they will explain the membership process if you wish to join.
