In most Kayastha families, the search for a rishta still begins with a biodata — a one- or two-page introduction that travels from family to family, often on WhatsApp. A clear, honest and well-arranged biodata makes a good first impression and saves both families time. This guide gives you a simple format, practical tips and a few precautions.

What a good biodata does

A biodata is not a CV. It should help the other family quickly understand three things: who the person is, what the family is like, and what kind of match you are looking for. Keep it to one page if possible, two at most, and use simple language.

A simple format

1. Personal details

  • Full name
  • Date and time of birth, and place of birth (needed for kundli)
  • Height, complexion (optional), and any important health information you wish to share honestly
  • Diet — vegetarian, eggetarian or non-vegetarian
  • Hobbies and interests, in one line

2. Education and work

  • Highest qualification and college
  • Current job or business, company and city
  • Income — many families now write a range, or share it only after the first talk

3. Family details

  • Father’s and mother’s names and occupations
  • Brothers and sisters, with marital status
  • Up-jaati (Srivastava, Saxena, Mathur, Bhatnagar…) and gotra, if your family follows gotra matching
  • Native place and current city
  • Family type — joint or nuclear

4. Partner preferences

  • Age range, education, profession and city preferences
  • Whether you are open to other up-jaatis or only your own
  • Whether kundli matching is required

5. Contact

  • A parent’s name and one phone number — preferably a parent’s, not the boy’s or girl’s own

Photos

Add two recent, clear photos: one close-up and one full-length, in good light. Avoid heavy filters, group photos and sunglasses. Traditional and casual — one of each — works well.

Kundli

If your family follows kundli matching, keep the exact birth time and place ready and share the kundli on request rather than in the first message. How much weight to give it is always the family’s own decision.

Privacy and safety tips

  • Do not put your full home address, Aadhaar or PAN number on a biodata.
  • Share the biodata as a PDF or image with a short name, and mention “for matrimony purpose only”.
  • Before you meet, verify the other family through relatives or the local Kayastha sabha.
  • Meet the first time in a public place or at a relative’s home.
  • Never send money to anyone you have met only online.

Common mistakes

  • Exaggerating income or height — it always comes out later and breaks trust.
  • Very old photos.
  • Writing a long list of expectations and very little about yourself.
  • Spelling mistakes in names and places — read it twice before sharing.
